Really family style diner. Food is good and cheap and the desserts are their real specialty. Definitely recommend if you drive by. There's also some interesting history that goes along with it.

Great breakfast. Just sad I'm not up in this area too often anymore.

The bacon egg and cheese is outta this world on wheat toast I've had it twice there and can't complain!!! The chicken finger basket is really good!! Yes the diner is small but who in the hell has heard of this little nest in no where's land?!

I can't understand why people hate on the Spready Oak. Folks, this is just a little diner in the middle of nowhere. If you're a food snob, go to Center City Philly, the Main Line, or Baltimore, find a five-star establishment there, and get your eat on. My hubby and I occasionally make the hour-and-a-half drive to the SO when we have a day off and want the experience of eating in a diner in a rural area. This place is so quaint and cute, plus it's a nice departure from the hustle and bustle of Delco. They played the local country-music radio station on the PA, and my fellow diners looked as if they had stepped out of an episode of Green Acres. Our waitress was very sweet, gave good service, and had a charming, almost Southern accent. Typical diner food was served (instant mashed potatoes with canned brown gravy, for example), and we were okay with it. The bread pudding was yummy and homemade! We will come back!

We loved the roast beef sandwiches for lunch. The gravy is sooo good on the fries, and the coleslaw....now that is really good too! No complaints for this local restaurant.

Surprisingly tasty diner food. Nothing fancy, but they have a zillion different puddings for dessert. Fries were excellent - thickish cut with just a hint of crunch. Bacon on my chicken salad triple decker was outstanding, and the Missus had a great burger, juicy and thick. This is not necessarily a destination restaurant, but if you're in the area and looking for a solid American breakfast or lunch, this is the place!

Have ridden by place several times on the way to Harley store. Usually crowded, so assumed it was good. Finally made a point of planning to stop for breakfast on a drive to Gettysburg this morning. We had mixed results: pork tenderloin was terrible, one bite, and sent it back for credit. Biscuit wasn't "southern style" too tall, dry; grits very bland. Owner came over to speak with us, and insisting on comping the entire bill, although we did eat the rest of it. Hubby isn't as fussy, so he enjoyed his meal. I insisted in leaving a hefty tip, feeling guilty as we didn't leave hungry. But the service alone most certainly didn't warrant the amount, as it was minimal at best, cordial, at least. And the flies were insanely annoying. Won't plan another stop, although we will pass by it again many times.

Stopped in for a quick bite after work and was pleased but not surprised. It's sort of exactly what you'd expect, tiny place that seats about twenty, with a small counter. The kitchen is mostly a grill, so the menu is diner fare. Sandwiches (hot & cold), fries, sides, etc. I had a grilled cheese with tomato & bacon which was good, but not great. The place was pretty crowded and the servers where hustling but still friendly. My server told me the pies are all made locally by Mennonite ladies so I had a slice and, sure enough, it was excellent. Overall I'd say the place was clean, the service was friendly and and the food was average..but average isn't necessarily bad. It's just familiar. I'm sure I'll stop in again next time I'm going by.

We went here mid-afternoon on a Tuesday, and the place was half full, which is pretty good for that time of day. For some reason it was very slow to get food (lunch took an hour and a half total, and we didn't take that long eating), and the one and only waitress seemed run ragged, both of which are odd for 2pm. I don't know if they were short-staffed or what. But the waitress (a younger woman) was very friendly, and gave us our pie and milkshake free by way of apology even though we hadn't complained. And the BLT and the reuben we got were reasonably good.

We have been here twice and it's just awful. The first time I ordered the chipped beef gravy and my boyfriend ordered the sausage gravy. They were both so bland we used almost an entire shaker of salt and pepper. We got a side of sausage which was disgusting. It shouldn't have even been called sausage. It was more like a lightly seasoned hamburger. The second time I went I took our three year old. He loved the Mickey Mouse shaped pancake. I ordered a cheese and mushroom omelette with hashbrowns. The mushrooms were definitely canned and the cheese tasted like Kraft singles (I guess I should have asked for a different cheese when I ordered) I despise Kraft singles. The hashbrowns had no seasoning whatsoever. Again I had to load on the salt and pepper. They were also cold in the middle, obviously frozen. It was a crappy experience. The service was mediocre and the chef just stares at you the whole time which was really creepy. Never again

I've passed this joint so many times and always wondered what was inside. I finally made it today for lunch. The space is pretty small by Diner standards, only about a dozen tables, most of them only to seat four. A total of three stools at the counter. Sheperd's Pie...ok...got an image in your head? Now..blow it up. I'll base my review on my first visit to the Spready Oak. The menu reads like most spots like this with your typical diner fare, hot turkey, roast beef, meatloaf, breakfast, etc... But I was tempted by the promise of the special on the board for Sheperd's Pie. Also..one of the soups today was Cream Of Crab. I'll get to that later. My order comes out and I am just staring down at this culinary misfire in front of me. I really should have snapped a picture. First thing wrong...the stuff is sitting in a bowl. On the bottom, is a layer of mixed vegetables....yellow corn, lima beans, peas... Mixed in there, is what looks like a leftover, decimated hamburger, burnt and diced up. And on top of the whole thing is a giant scoop of mashed potatoes, and a sprinkle of some shredded yellow cheese on top for garnish? As I started to dig in, I was giggling inside to the fact I should have expected anything authentic. I will go back, but make sure I order the turkey platter with neon yellow gravy... The breakfasts that were making their way around looked decent as well. There were also what might have been homemade cakes, and a selection of Hershey's Ice Cream...and so a saving attempt is possible.

I have to admit, when looking for breakfast spots in the area, I almost counted Spready Oak out due to these reviews. They must have fired the waitress earning bad reviews and improved their portions because I would definitely recommend this place to friends. The service was kind, courteous, and prompt. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with home fries. It was really good but I couldn't finish my plate! The waitress offered me a box and my fiance ate my leftovers for brinner. The interior is small and country (of course). Though small, I really like the look and atmosphere. The restaurant and bathrooms seemed to be clean. The only thing keeping me from giving a fifth star is the fact that I found an ant crawling on me. I'm not sure if it was from my table, the bathroom, or what but this was before the food was served so it was easy enough to get it away. Something that should be noted! You may use card here BUT you cannot tip on your card. This was no problem, as my waitress broke my twenty for me so I could tip in cash.

My wife and I live close to this restaurant. We have been there many times over the last 3 years and have decided to stop going there. The food was okay, not great but it was for the most part fresh and home made. The reason we have decided to stop going there is because whenever we go in we get mediocre service. It's almost like how dare you come in here and expect service. This is not a one time deal, it's every time and with one waitress in particular.
